Low hotel occupancy ideal time for new flooring installation, says KBAC

Swedish flooring producer, Bolon – the “inventors” of woven vinyl flooring – has expanded its operations into Norway and immediately secured several contracts from a hospitality sector now globally experiencing pandemic low occupancy.

KBAC Flooring, the sole local distributors of Bolon, believes South African hotels and lodges should now also take advantage of the lull in their activities to consider refurbishment – including flooring – which can be handled unobtrusively before the year-end rush starts.

Bolon flooring has recently been installed in Norway at the Thon Hotel and the Radisson Blu Nydalen Hotel (both in Oslo), Quality Hotel River Station in Drammen, and in Cityox Danmarksplass Hotel in Bergen. Bolon flooring was even utilised as headboards in one innovative installation.

The biggest of the new Bolon contracts was for 10 000m2 of flooring for the Thon Hotel, part of a Norwegian hotel chain of over 70 properties in Sweden, Norway and Belgium.  Thon Hotel interiors are always designed in a specific style to give each an individual character and a unique experience for visitors and Bolon’s abundance of colour, patterns and tactile textures have been the preferred flooring for many of the chain’s hotels. Specified by the Olav Thon Group design team, Bolon flooring is found harmoniously interacting with floral wallpaper and fake deer heads in Thon Hotels in all three countries.

The Bolon flooring installed at the Radisson Blu Nydalen Hotel followed a specification by the designer team at Milla Boutique. The new woven vinyl flooring transformed the hotel’s restaurant, bar and conference centre through the application of a muted colour palette.

Fusing comfort and space, the interior architects at Haeg Interiörarkitektur did an excellent job in creating a serene atmosphere at the Quality River Station Hotel, Drammen’s tallest building. The innovative way in which Bolon flooring was used in this hotel includes serving as striking yet functional bed headboards, room rugs, and flooring from several collections in the common areas.

Bolon emerald green contrasts with light grey Bolon flooring in the rooms of Citybox Danmarksplass, a hotel designed by Citybox’s own interior architects. Situated in Solheimsviken in Bergen, the hotel features Bolon flooring to create a soothing, light and inviting interior environment combined with stunning views of the water and surrounding areas.

Bolon celebrated its 70th anniversary last year, while KBAC Flooring marked 50 years of operations. Bolon is a family business – run by sisters Annica and Marie Eklund – which has evolved and grown from a traditional weaving mill into an international design brand with iconic clients such as Armani, Google, Four Seasons Hotels, Chanel, Adidas, Apple and Missoni. With a strong commitment to sustainability, Bolon designs and manufactures all its products at a facility in Ulricehamn in Sweden.

Bolon woven vinyl flooring contains recycled material, is easy to maintain, has a high-performance classification (“33 Heavy commercial”), and is sold with a 15-year warranty.
